Window Size and Rough Opening Calculator

Calculate the required rough opening (RO) dimensions for a window installation based on the window's nominal (finished) size. The rough opening must be slightly larger than the window unit to allow for shimming, leveling, and insulation.

Formulas Used

Standard Wood/Vinyl Frame (IRC R612.2):

  • RO Width = Nominal Width + 2.0"  (0.5" shim + 0.5" gap, each side)
  • RO Height = Nominal Height + 2.5"  (0.5" shim top & bottom + 1.5" sill plate)

Masonry / Block Opening:

  • RO Width = Nominal Width + 2.0"  (1.0" clearance each side)
  • RO Height = Nominal Height + 2.0"  (1.0" clearance top & bottom)

Replacement Window:

  • RO Width = Nominal Width (no addition — sized to existing opening)
  • RO Height = Nominal Height

Approximate Glass Area: Glass Area ≈ Nominal Area × 0.80 (accounts for frame width in a typical double-hung window)

Assumptions & References

  • Standard rough opening additions follow IRC Section R612.2 and AAMA/WDMA industry guidelines.
  • The +2" width and +2.5" height additions are the most widely accepted standard for new wood-framed construction with vinyl or wood windows.
  • Masonry openings use a larger 1" clearance per side to accommodate block coursing (typically 8" modules) and mortar joints.
  • Replacement windows are measured to fit the existing rough opening; no addition is applied — always measure the existing opening in three places and use the smallest dimension.
  • Glass area estimate of 80% of nominal area is typical for standard double-hung windows; casement and picture windows may have higher glass-to-frame ratios (85–90%).
  • Header sizing for structural loads is not calculated here — consult local building codes (IRC Table R602.7) or a licensed structural engineer.
  • Always verify rough opening requirements with the specific window manufacturer's installation instructions, as tolerances can vary by ±1/4".
  • Input range: 6" to 240" (20 ft) for both width and height.
